As we approach the end of the year and get into the holiday season, we like to let our worries be forgotten for a little while as we celebrate with family and friends. With the celebrations of course come gifts, lots of foody treats, and general cheer. This of course means that spending money is going to go up a bit to cover all of that, and it’s sad to say, but it’s very true, that those trying to commit credit card fraud and theft will be on the prowl.

With the increase in expenses for this time it tends to be easier for someone who skimmed your credit details to sneak in some purchases at your expense. In order to try and counter this you’ll need to stay on top of your spending at all times. Where to find the time during this busy season? That is the question isn’t it, and there may not be an easy answer to it, be that as it may you’re going to have to find or make the time for this to work out.

The first step in this is keeping your receipts from all your purchases. Hopefully you’re keeping them by default just in case a gift needs to be returned (it happens!) for whatever reason. Keep them handy and keep a running tally of your total expenses as you make them. In addition, if you engage in online banking at all, use that for a quick reference of your running total in addition to your receipts. More importantly, the online banking aspect can be used to quickly keep an eye on any sudden, unexpected expenses that might pop up.

If you notice things going wrong then you need to immediately call your credit company or bank and have them cancel that card. The sooner these things are spotted the quicker and easier they can be addressed. Remember that just because it’s the holidays those in the business of fraud aren’t necessarily taking it off.
